What the connection is and what it asks of your mornings
The body does not distinguish between what you think of as physical and what you think of as mental. Neither does the gut.
The gut-brain axis is not a metaphor. It is an anatomical structure. The enteric nervous system contains approximately 500 million neurons and communicates bidirectionally with the central nervous system via the vagus nerve. The gut produces roughly 90% of the body's serotonin. It manufactures neurotransmitter precursors that the brain cannot produce independently.
